The ongoing reorganization of capitalist forms of exploitation on the global scene has had significant impacts in the Portuguese context, as well as in Europe more broadly. Processes of gentrification, the downsizing of the public sector and its service provision in the wake of the financial crisis, and new forms of extraction and valorization have had profound effects of precarisation, as well as spurring new forms of solidarity and resistance. With this event, we want to take stock of such processes by listening to some of the protagonists of these changes and, above all, of the struggles such transformations gave rise to. We take the opportunity of European activists’ and researchers’ visit to put them in dialogue with unionized dockworkers, housing activists, and those resisting against mining operations and environmental destruction across different sites in Portugal.
